A budget car
A small city car can be the best choice if you stay on the ring road and you've the plan to visit the main touristic attractions. Please keep in mind that his type of car can not be used on the F-roads.
The Jimmy or the Dacia Duster
We used this light ATV with a roof tent. Ideal for the highlands. The only disadvantage is the limited luggage space. Be careful with deep rivers and quick sand!
Camper
In Iceland they have a wide range of campers: mini-camper, off-road camper or larger van. all of them have a fridge, a heating, a cooking stove and a bed and some basic equipment for picnic. In case of bad weather they're more comfortable than a tent. Large campers like the one on the picture are quite expensive. Most of them can be used by family's.
Large is SUV 4 X 4
These are well equipped for all F-roads in the highlands. There almost no limit in exploring the island. The weakest part of the are the tires. Be careful with rocky tracks and quick sands because they're quite heavy. To rent these vehicles you need a high budget. Experience with off-road driving is highly recommended mainly in crossing rivers.
