How to travel to Iceland?
By plane + rented car
if you have limited time (1 or 2,5 weeks), the best solution is taking a plane and renting a vehicle.
Keep in mind: renting a vehicle in Iceland is expensive and can be tricky: insurance all included? F-roads permitted ... .? There is a wide variety of types of vehicles: SUV, 4X4, off-road camper, mini-camper, camper.
The choice of vehicle is depending on the type of places you want to visit.
By ferry with your own vehicle
A good option if your holiday takes at least 3 weeks.
It takes more than a week to get to Iceland: travel to Denmark + 47 hours on the ship, having time to meet people with the same interest.
The option to stay a few days on Faroe Islands is depending on the selected sailing schedule.
If you have quite some weeks of holidays it's a good idea to spend a few days in Faroes. If you 're more limited in time, we would recommend to spend more time in Iceland!
By vehicle cargo + flight
MS Mykines sails weekly between The Netherlands (Rotterdam) and Iceland (Þorlákshöfn).
You leave your car on Monday morning at the Harbour of Rotterdam and, it will arrive at Þorlákshöfn on Friday, picking up on the following Monday. The price for the sailing, the trip by plane and the taxi from Keflavik to Þorlákshöfn is more or less the same price as if you choose for the previous option (ferry) - without taking into account the cost to bring your vehicle to Rotterdam.
The big advantage of this option is that you don’t loose time to get with your vehicle to Hirstals (DK) and the trip on the ferry to Iceland.
If you want to travel with your own car in Iceland, having a limited holiday period and you don’t like to spend your time on a ship for 4 days, this is a good option.
