Driving in Iceland
It can be fun, challenging and joyful within the limitations of safety and respect for nature.
The N1 or the Ringroad is the main road of 1332 km (828 miles) and takes 17 hours driving depending on the weather conditions. This scenic road gives you easy access to the main tourist attractions.
The Ringroad (N1) or the F-roads?
The F-roads are mountain or highland roads which are heading to the interior part of the country. These roads can be more difficult to drive because they can be rocky, full of potholes, muddy or steep and regularly you have to cross rivers. Check if you are allowed to drive on these F-roads if you have a rented car.
Risks of driving in Iceland
Roads can be dangerous. Stay always ont the indicated tracks even when you think another track can be easier! It's even forbidden to deviate from these tracks, even with the risk of a high penalty.
Be careful with rivers!
Glacier rivers you better cross in the morning. They can be full with rocks, danger for quicksands or deeper than you expect.
Limit your speed!
Adapt your speed to the road conditions and the weather. Strong side winds can be very dangerous. Enjoy the landscape!
Don't drive alone!
If you take F-roads, try to find a partner to join! Just in case of a breakdown, you might need another vehicle to help you...
